Gun Control At Last?

By now I would imagine Ted Nugent is foaming at the mouth, yet again. Senator Rand Paul, already dreaming about nabbing the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, is blustering on about potential legislation to block President Obama’s executive orders, and Texas Republican House member Steve Stockman , along with Florida House rookie Trey Radel, will likely (briefly) interrupt 2nd amendment-mandated militia training (in this instance goose-stepping briskly around the Capitol long enough to file articles of impeachment against the President. What has these paragons of stability so aroused? Good question.
President Obama has followed through on his promise to address gun violence by proposing legislation that will:
• Require criminal background checks for all gun sales
• Reinstate the assault weapons ban
• Restore a 10-round limit on ammunition magazine
• Eliminate armor-piercing bullets
• Provide mental health screening & services in schools
• Institute a federal gun trafficking statute
• Allocate funds to hire more police officers
There is absolutely no provision (unfortunately) that would “go after” any weapons and/or ammunition clips currently and lawfully owned.

In addition, the President issued 23 executive orders ranging from improving the background check system and avenues of inter-state cooperation, to providing law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
While no one can argue with any certainty whether or not these policies may have prevented the specific tragedy at Newtown, there’s no denying that it’s time to address the epidemic of gun violence in our country. It’s past time.
I believe that the measures the President has proposed/undertaken could save lives in the future, and it would be tragic if the NRA and its gun lobby allies are able to block a timely and thoughtful discussion. It’s clear they have no intention of relinquishing one hollow point bullet or automatic weapon if it means a loss of their power. In the meantime, they have chosen to demonize the President, his family, Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Cuomo, Senator Feinstein, Sarah Brady, and any other proponents of rational Second Amendment rights.

One is left to wish for a 24th Executive Order that would establish a (poison) rhetoric-free
zone… an island of calm, rational discussion free from the likes of Nugent, Paul, Stockman, Radel, Rick Perry,Wayne LaPierre, Kendell Kroeker, et al. Now that would be sweet.

Poisonous Brotherhood of the Nugent Wackos

You couldn’t make this stuff up if you tried!
You can reliably count on politicians of both major parties (and their supporters) to make ludicrous comments with disturbing regularity during an election cycle, and 2012 has proved to be no exception.

Perhaps one the most disturbing statements thus far has come from Texas Republican Representative Louis Gohmert, and it had little to do with any political campaign but rather he sought to offer an explanation for the recent tragic shootings at the “Batman Dark Knight Rises” premiere in Aurora, Colorado.

According to Gohmert, the shootings were “the result of ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs”. In other words, secularism was to blame. Usually these types of off-the-wall pronouncements originate with someone like the Rev. Pat Robertson, but lately he’s been pre-occupied with sanctioning divorce in instances where one partner in a marriage is afflicted with Alzheimers. This time it’s Gohmert who’s donning the mantle of God’s spokesperson. Uh-huh.
In a similarly crazy vein (though in this case directly tied into partisan politics), Tennessee state Representative Kelly Keisling (Republican) emailed his constituents to inform them that President Obama is planning to stage a fake assassination attempt in order to stop the 2012 election from happening. Apparently this rumor has been widely circulated through conservative and conspiracy sites/blogs. Surprisingly, Keisling actually apologized saying “the message was inappropriate for distribution”. Really.

Luckily he pledges to “be more cautious regarding the information distributed from my office in the future.” Anyone laying odds?
Caution has never been a hallmark of crazy person Ted Nugent. In his most recent diatribe Nugent informs us that President Obama “represents everything bad about humanity.” Earlier this year he had referred to the President as “vile”, “evil” and “America-hating”. He added “if Barack Obama becomes the President in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.” Nugent’s outbursts resulted in a U.S. Secret Service investigation. One might have hoped the experience would result in a more sober and thoughtful Ted Nugent. Not.

Perhaps the best we can do is pray for re-election and the chance that there may have been a prophetic element to his prediction!

Finally, where would any blog post on "crazy" be without the latest ramblings by everyone's favorite egomaniac Donald Trump?
Apparently the reality television personality and sometime businessperson will not be addressing the GOP delegates in Tampa, but promises an even bigger "surprise".  Perhaps it will have something to do with President Obama's birth certificate (since Trumps' pretty much a one trick pony).  Perhaps not.  In either event, wake me up when he's done... and not a minute sooner.

Mitt & Ann Romney's Dog Days Continue

It's clear the Romney campaign is petrified by the ongoing fallout they've been experiencing as a result of Mitt and Ann's inexcusable mistreatment/abuse of Seamus the Irish Setter.
The fact that they've tried to divert attention away from themselves and onto the President by citing a passage from his 2004 autobiography "Dreams of My Father" (in which he described assorted items he was fed as a young child in Indonesia) smacks of nothing but desperation.
They can't honestly believe the American people won't recognize the difference between the unfortunate sampling of snake, dog, and grasshopper ("meat") given to a six or seven year old child in a foreign land and the willful mistreatment of an allegedly "beloved" family pet by two adults who certainly ought to know better.  Mitt and Ann stand before us naked:  revealed as disingenuous and out of touch.
Rather than deny, obfuscate, or engage in re-writing history ("Seamus loved riding up there; he only had that diarrhea because he'd eaten some bad turkey"), they should both simply apologize.  It's clearly too late for Seamus, but I would imagine the animal welfare/rights community--as well as all of us who've cherished sprecial animal companions in our lives--would appreciate it.
And, if the Romneys still feel the need to crate some form of life on the top of one of their vehicles, I would ask them to consider Ted Nugent... provided the Secret Service is done with him.
